David Wright Hylton

 

1947-2010 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of David, peacefully, at Vancouver General Hospital on Sunday May 2nd 2010. He leaves behind his best friend and devoted wife Maya Yazbek and cherished daughter Emmanuelle. Predeceased by his mother Kathleen Wright and younger brother John. Survived by his father David C. Hylton & loving sister Patricia (John) Bednarz. Uncle David will be deeply missed by nephews Ryan & Evan Bednarz (fishing buddy) and nieces Sara & Annie Hylton. Born in Vancouver, B.C., David spent his primary years in Montreal. He graduated from St Francis Xavier University & obtained an MBA from Queens University. He held rank of Captain with the Canadian Armed Forces between 1968 & 1971. Between 1979 & 1994, David held various positions with Export Development Canada in Ottawa. He was further seconded to Kvaerner Chemetics in Vancouver to manage their treasury functions. In 2000, David relocated to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia accepting the position of Senior Advisor & Credit Consultant for the Saudi Export Program. In 2004, David returned to Canada & secured a position with SNC Lavalin in Vancouver as VP Project Financing. David loved his solitude, his newspaper, his wine, the stock market, his cigars, fishing, his family and his close friends. We extend our sincere thanks to the doctors & nurses of the BC Cancer Agency and to the staff of the Palliative Care unit at VGH for their care & compassion during this difficult time. If love could have saved him, David would not be gone.



Eileen A. O’Sullivan

Peacefully in Hamilton April 11, 2010. Predeceased by her parents Dr. Paul M. O'Sullivan and Eileen N. (Douglas) O'Sullivan. Survived by her five brothers and sisters, Sean, Donal, Shelagh, Brian and Deirdre. Eileen is also survived by her nieces Heather, Breanna and Callie and her nephew Stephen. Eileen was a high school teacher with the Hamilton Wentworth School Board from 1971-2002. Donations can be made to the Juravinski Cancer Centre in Hamilton.

 




Gerry A. Keites

Gerry Anthony Keites, age 61 of Melrose, passed away on Tuesday, January 19, 2010 at The Malcolm Randall VA Medical Center in Gainesville, FL after a six-year struggle with cancer.
Born on August 31, 1948 in Portland, Maine, Gerry graduated from Portland High School and attended St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia. He joined the Navy in 1970 and served as a radio operator, primarily stationed in the Mediterranean and in Key West.
He moved to south Florida in 1979 and eventually settled in the Melrose area in 1981. It was there that he met his wife Jill and together they opened The Melrose Café on State Road 26 in 1986.
Two years later, Gerry, a brick mason by trade, built the structure that presently houses the Melrose Café on County Road 21 which he and Jill owned and operated until 2007.
Gerry had a deep love for children, often sponsoring and coaching youth sports teams. He was also known to masquerade as Santa Clause when the real Santa was busy. An avid Gator fan, Gerry was especially passionate about Gator Basketball. Among his prized possessions was a Billy Donovan autographed photograph. He also cheered on all the sports teams at Santa Fe College and marveled at the quality institution it is.
Gerry had made a special bond with the people of Melrose and, when his health permitted, thoroughly enjoyed boating with close friends and family on Lake Santa Fe.
Gerry's family wishes to express heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Mary Aplin and the wonderful doctors and nurses at the VA Center ICU unit for the expert care and medical attention that they provided during his last few years.
A celebration of life will be held in his honor on Saturday, January 30th at 1:00PM at 126 Point Louisa Road on Cowpen Lake.
He was preceded in death by his father Leslie, his mother Josephine and his brother Curtis.
He is survived by his loving wife of 23 years Jill, three brothers, Phillip of Dover Foxcroft, Me., Edward of Westbrook, Me., James of Hawthorne, Fl. and three sisters, Wendy Morse and Karen Curran of Portland, Me., and Jean Lee of South Portland, Me.


Francis ‘Frank’ Ambrose O’Connell

Francis "Frank" Ambrose O'Connell of Medicine Hat, passed away on Tuesday, October 20, 2009, at the age of 71 years. He leaves to cherish his memory two sons, Shaun (Jody) O'Connell of Calgary and Dan (Erin) O'Connell of Seattle, Washington and their mother, Ellie O'Connell of Medicine Hat; four grandchildren, Kaitlin, Daine, Sam and Jack; three brothers, Clarence (Jeanne) O'Connell of Florida, Willy O'Connell and Freddie (Bonnie) O'Connell all of Boston and one sister, Joan Beaton of Madison, New York. He was predeceased by his parents, Vera (Morrison) and Francis O'Connell; five brothers, David, Michael Francis, William, Beau and Lennie. Frank was born in New Waterford, Nova Scotia to a family of coal miners. He was raised in Nova Scotia and graduated from Mount Carmel High School and was the first in his family to attend University. He graduated from St. Francis Xavier University with a B.A. in 1966. He then attended Dalhousie Law School, graduating in 1969. He articled in Toronto and was called to the Bar of the Law Society of upper Canada in 1971. He then worked in Timmins and Northern Ontario for a few years. On March 2, 1974 he married Elena Majkutova and they moved to Alberta, and in 1975 he was appointed to the Law Society of Alberta. They settled in Medicine Hat where he became the City Solicitor, retiring in 1987 but continuing to practice law until the early 1990's. During his retirement he enjoyed spending time with family, friends and his grandchildren as well as taking his beloved Tia for walks.

Todd Omer Scott

 

(July 8, 1943 - January 28, 2010) Passed away of cancer peacefully at his home in Sharon, Ontario with his family by his side. Predeceased by his father Omer and his mother Phylliss (nee Todd). Loving husband of Monique (nee Lajeunesse) for 42 years. Devoted father of Michael (Joanna), Stacey (Michael) and Dayna (Adrian). Brother of Randy (Carol) and MaryJane (Jeff). Proud and loving grandfather of Lucas, Clara, Aaron, Rohan, Kyle and Tatiana. Brother-in-law of Bobbie (Shirley), Richard, Louise, Carole (Jean-Pierre). Also very fondly remembered by all his nephews and nieces. Todd established 3D Storage Systems in Newmarket, Ontario in 1990 which he and his partners built into a successful business through his leadership and hard work. He enjoyed gardening, boating, golfing and spending time at the cottage with family and friends.

 


John ‘Alexander’ MacLean

The four sisters of Alexander are very sad to announce his passing in Saint Joseph’s Hospital, Toronto on May 24, 2011.
Born on Sept. 15, 1940, Alexander was the eldest child of the late Flora Mae (Gillis) and Peter F. MacLean of Iona, Victoria County.
He graduated Saint Francis Xavier University, Antigonish, 1962 and Holy Heart Seminary, Halifax, 1966. In 1976 he chose to leave the priesthood and enjoyed a life long career with educational career colleges.
His interests were music, sports and politics. His first musical recording was while he was a student at St. F.X. when Celtic Records produced The Piano Stylings of The Cape Breton Scot, believed to be the first recorded album of piano music devoted to the music of the Cape Breton Scot. His most recent Celtic piano CDs are Across the Ocean Wave and Lake Bras d’Or.
Alexander leaves his sisters, Anne (Lawrence Nestman), Florence (Joseph Kanary), Theresa, Helen (James MacDonald), all of Halifax; nieces and nephews, Lara, Natasha, Peter, Leah, Lucy, Shamus and Scott along with seven grand nieces and grand nephews. Also surviving are his supportive paternal aunts, Mary MacDonald, Baddeck, Teresa Morrison, Sydney and Nancy Gallagher, Florida.
The family would like to thank David and Somaieh Woodworth and their children for their love and friendship to Alexander in Toronto. Also thanks to Peter and Gail Dykstra of Toronto for their support and endearing friendship to Alexander.
Alexander will be remembered as an optimistic, loving, generous brother and a true and loyal friend.
In accordance with Alexander’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be a private family burial.
A random act of kindness would honour Alexander’s memory.


 


Woody Hayes

HAYES, WOODY - Woody Hayes, of Riverview, at the age of 72, passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by his loving family and friends on Wednesday, June 1, 2011, following a lengthy illness. Born in Sommerville, Mass., USA, he was the son of the late Ralph and Ethel (Smith) Hayes. He will be forever remembered by Jackie, his loving wife of 47 years, children Kim Williams (Kevin), Donna Green (Weldon) and Mike Hayes (Shelley) all of Riverview, five precious grandchildren; Marty, Kelsey, Veronica, Brad and Bailey, cousin, David Smith (Barb) and their children Danny and Greg, as well as several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his loving uncle Frank and aunt Dot. Woody enjoyed a life long career in teaching at Harrison Trimble High School having retired in 1997 after 29 years of service. A true loyal Trojan, he was very active at Trimble, where he was the head football coach from 1968-1979, leading the team to seven Provincial Championships. He also coached Trimble's boys baseball team and the girls softball team. Besides his passion for sports at Harrison Trimble, he coached the school debating team from 1972-1974, and took great pride in promoting Canadian Literature with trips to Montreal and Toronto to meet with great Canadian Authors. His love for life went well beyond the walls of Harrison Trimble High School, Woody was also head coach of the Riverview Mustangs Football Team. He was inducted to the Sports Hall of Fame at St. F X. University in 1992 and the Moncton Sports Hall of Fame in 1995. Woody also proudly served in the US Marine Corps. After his retirement, he traveled and spent winters in Florida with Jackie and their close friends, and enjoyed many special moments with his cherished grandchildren. Above all, his life's passion was his love for his beautiful wife, Jackie.
The family will be receiving relatives and friends at Cobb’s Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 330 Whitepine Road, Riverview (869-2007) on Friday from 2 to 4 PM and 7 to 9 PM, with parish prayers and sharing of memories to take place at 8:30 PM. Michael David Randall

RANDALL, Michael DAVID April 7, 1948 – August 12, 2011 It is with great sadness that the family of David announces his passing after a brief, but courageous battle with cancer. David, known for his dry sense of humour and outstanding compassionate character, grew up in Liverpool, NS, the fourth of nine children and second son in a family of seven sisters. It was a household dominated with female presence. Undaunted, he to rose to the occasion and blazed the trail for the girls in every direction imaginable. David believed in doing things "his way". He developed a keen interest in sports from an early age encompassing baseball (his Blessed Boston Red Sox), football (his Huskies family), golf and hockey. He met his wife, Brenda Gordon, at Saint Mary's University. They had one daughter, Lindsay Rae. Her arrival made his life complete and to David, Lindsay was his crowning achievement, proven to all throughout the years. David was the ultimate father!
David was employed with Canada Post for 31 years, retiring in 2006. Retirement meant more time for family, friends, the coffee club, sports, and winter trips to Florida with the guys and trips to Calgary to visit his western family. For many decades David was a dedicated supporter of SMU and most recently was General Manager of the Saint Mary's Huskies football team. He was a father figure to many an athlete and was always at his best when helping others. Known as "Dave" to many, he made countless lasting friendships through the medium of sports. David had an army of loyal friends because he was a good and loyal friend himself. He was well known in the community for his organizational skills for charity events and was involved with many golf classics, silent auctions and various other events.
David is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Brenda, daughter Lindsay, son-in-law Jeremy Delorey, seven sisters: Eleanor (Don) Brucks, Calgary, Catherine, Halifax, Marion (Peter) Croft, Digby, Lorraine, Halifax, Dorothy Clayre (Gary) Charlton, Halifax, Patricia, Calgary, Suzanne Goodwin, Calgary, sister in law Karen (Phil) Cole, Truro, sister-in-law Karla (Kirby) Thompson, Truro and many nieces, nephews, cousins and relatives too numerous to mention, as well as his buddy, Fella. All will miss his larger than life presence in their lives. He was predeceased by his maternal and paternal grandparents, his parents, Jack and Marion Randall of Halifax, his brother John of Liverpool, and his brother-in-law and friend Allan Goodwin of Calgary, father and mother-in-law Ralph and Anne Gordon and brother-in-law Brian Gordon all of Truro.
David's family would like to acknowledge Dr. Giacamantonio and the staff of 9A at the VG for their compassionate care and kindness.

David (Sonny) MacLean

New Glasgow – David “Sonny” MacLean. It is with great sadness the family of David C. “Sonny” MacLean, 68, of Cottage Street, New Glasgow announces he passed away peacefully on June 28 at the Aberdeen Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. Sonny was born in New Glasgow the youngest of 10 children of the late Hugh John and Loretta (Fogarty) MacLean. He attended school at St John’s Academy and New Glasgow High before heading to St FX where he played varsity hockey graduating in 1966 with Bachelor of Commerce. Dave worked for the Federal Government Manpower department for 30 years, the first couple of years in Sydney, returning home to New Glasgow in 1971 for the rest of his career. Sonny semi-retired in 1998, continuing to consult in his areas of expertise at Career Connections for the next 4 years - as long as it did not interfere with golf season. Sonny had a passion for everything in life but most especially Darla, his devoted wife of 44 years and his son, Glenn – his all time favourite golfing partner. He was a long time member of Abercrombie Golf Club and a key organizer of the Legends Golf league there. He was inducted into both St FX and Pictou County Sports Hall of Fame (for hockey). He was a loyal fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs; a proud member of the Bombers club; actively involved in the 2000 North End Reunion; volunteer for minor hockey; volunteer for the NS Kidney Foundation; member of Toastmasters and a lifelong member of St John’s Parish in New Glasgow. Sonny enjoyed the many hours he spent at Melmerby Beach each summer, was an avid reader and in the last few years, travelled to New York, Florida, Massachusetts, Toronto and Niagara Falls. Sonny was the heart and soul of his extended family and friends. Sonny had a keen sense of humour with a quick wit, able to get away with saying anything to anybody and leave them with a smile on their face. No matter who or what the circumstance, Sonny always made you feel welcome and at home. Sonny was a beloved husband, compassionate father, favourite uncle and true friend. He is survived by wife Darla (Campbell), son Glenn; brothers and sisters Jack (Pat), Don “Ducky” (Viola), Bob (Laura), Kaye (Jim) MacDonald, Betty (Roddie) Flavin of New Glasgow; brother Harvey of Halifax; sister-in-law Doris of New Glasgow; many loving nieces and nephews. Sonny will also be deeply missed by Darla’s sisters Nancy and Kathy and the entire extended Campbell family. He was predeceased by his parents Hugh John and Loretta (Fogarty); brother Joe and sisters Isabel Power and Marion Collins. Sonny played a huge role in the lives of all he touched and we will be comforted by our memories of all he meant to each of us. Visitation will be held at R.H. E. Paul Morrissy

MORRISSY, E. PAUL - It is with great sadness that the family of E. Paul Morrissy announces his sudden death at the Saint John Regional Hospital on August 12, 2011 after a brief and courageous battle with cancer. Born in Newcastle, NB on May 1, 1939, Paul was the son of the late Dr. R. H. and Mary (Calder) Morrissy.
Paul is survived by Maureen, his wife of 42 years; son, Sean (Nadine) Morrissy; daughter, Kate (Paul) Sheppard, all of Fredericton; four grandchildren who were his great joy – Liam and Emma Morrissy, and Peyton and Alex Sheppard. He is also survived by a sister, Kathleen (Paul) Daigle, of Moncton; and a brother, Dick (Milena) of Burnaby, BC; and by 11 nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Jane Allan. Paul attended St. Thomas College in Chatham, NB and St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, NS. After a brief time at the Coady Institute (St. F.X.) he left to work in Honduras and Mexico. He received his M.A. in Anthropology from the University of the Americas in Mexico City and returned to Canada in 1968 where he began his career teaching anthropology and mentoring many students at St. Thomas University. Paul had been a Director of the Native Studies Program at STU and was a committed supporter of First Nations students at the university and in the community. He retired after 32 years from “the best job I ever had.”
He had been active over time in his community as a member of the Fredericton North Rotary, the “Y" 's Men Epsilon Club, the Chinese Cultural Association and the Multicultural Association of Fredericton. He had been a board member of the Fredericton YMCA and the NB Archaeology Society. Paul had a great zest for life, good food and wine, VW camping, his friends, his students and, above all, his family…and salt. He loved the “Y” and was a regular at Aqua-Fit class. He and Maureen travelled extensively over the years and he loved to spin tales of those adventures.
The family wishes to thank Drs. Irrinki and Hauman, of Fredericton and Drs. Carson, Campbell and Tyler, from Radiation Oncology at the Saint John Regional Hospital and the wonderful staff on Oncology there.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Chalmers Regional Hospital Foundation or St. Thomas University for Anthropology Scholarships in memory of Paul Morrissy would be appreciated.

Thomas (Tom) Stanton

September 11, 1945 – August 21, 2011

It is with heavy hearts that the family announces that Tom passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 21, 2011 following a brief and courageous battle with cancer.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 36 years Adele, his cherished daughter Lindsay (Darcy Lien), sister Suzanne (Don Laughlin), brother Michael, brother-in-law Paul (Laverne Whitman) and his many special nieces and nephews. Lovingly remembered by Shannon Cosmescu and Alison Schaeffer for whom he had a special place in his heart.

He was born in Arnprior, Ontario and predeceased by his parents, Earl and Ferne, and sister Sandra. Shortly after graduating from St. Francis Xavier University, he moved to Calgary where he began a lifetime career in the Insurance Industry. He was a successful businessman who deeply valued his strong relationships with his colleagues, many of whom became his treasured friends and confidants. He had a keen mind for business development and excelled in many aspects of the brokerage business. He had a great passion for cars and golf and was a member of Pinebrook G.C.C. where he enjoyed many friendly rounds of golf. He loved to travel to Palm Springs during the winter with his family, who were his greatest joy. Tom was a gifted story teller with an incredible sense of humor and a personality that filled the room. Tom strived to live a life of unconditional love and kindness that can be witnessed in the many close relationships that he maintained. Through Tom’s selflessness, one of his greatest joys came through helping others. He was a devoted husband, father, brother, uncle, friend and mentor, and will be deeply missed. His strong values and loving spirit will live on in the hearts of those who knew him.

Adele, Lindsay and Darcy extend heartfelt thanks to family and friends whose kind support sustained them through Tom’s illness. The family would also like to thank the dedicated staff at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre for the exceptional care they provided to Tom over the last few months – special thanks to Stephanie who was an angel. Tom – a kind and gentle soul who always said “we just have to put in the effort, the rest is up to God” – and that he did throughout his life, particularly during his illness.

Mary Margaret (MacDonald) Gillis died peacefully at her home in Whitney Pier on Sept. 3, 2011.
Born on Sept. 22, 1944, Mary Margaret was the daughter of Hilda MacDonald and the late Hector MacDonald.
The eldest of six children, she graduated from St. Francis Xavier University in 1963 with a bachelor of education.
Mary Margaret is survived by her husband of 45 years, John Gillis; her daughters, Karen (Travis Payzant), Cathy (Neil MacDonald) and Patricia (Douglas Dufour); and grandsons, Greg and Jack MacDonald. She is also survived by her mother, Hilda; sister, Anne Louise Leith; brothers, Alex (Valerie), Francis (Karen), Peter (Trish) and Danny (Dany) MacDonald. She will be fondly remembered by her many nieces and nephews, as well as her sisters-in-law, Margie Hartigan (Tommy) and Colleen Johnston (Danny); and brother-in-law, Harry Tobin.
Mary Margaret was predeceased by her son, John (John-John), father, Hector MacDonald, sisters-in-law, Laurie McCarron and Bonnie Tobin, and brother-in-law, Jimmy McCarron.
Mary Margaret devoted much of her life to caring for anyone she saw as friends and family. The life of her son, John-John stands as a testament to her strength and her courage. Her younger nieces, Katie, Jennifer, Isabelle and Molly spent many of their pre-school days reading and laughing with Mary Margaret. She will be remembered by all as a woman who put her family first, but had time for everyone. Mary Margaret’s warm spirit, generosity, humour and sense of adventure will be sadly missed by all who knew her, and especially by her sister-in-law, Colleen Johnston, with whom she travelled many miles and shared much laughter and her sister-in-law, Trish MacDonald with whom she shared a long history of memories and friendship.
Visitation for the late Mary Margaret Gillis will be held at the Pier Community Funeral Home, Whitney Pier, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street) on Wednesday, Sept. 7, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass to celebrate Mary Margaret’s life will be held Thursday, Sept. 8, 2011, at 11 a.m. at Holy Redeemer Church with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating. Reception will be held at the Pier Community Funeral Home. Interment will take place in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.

Dr. Louis Simon

Passed Away On: 08/07/2011

SIMON, DR. LOUIS M. - The death of Louis M. Simon,husband of the late Carol A. (Keating) Simon, occurred at his residence on Friday July 8, 2011. Lou was born in Saint John, a son of the late Louis M. (Si) and Frances (Donovan) Simon. A lifelong resident of the city, he graduated from St. Malachy's High School in 1956, and was a former President of the alumni. He attended St Francis Xavier University and then graduated from Dalhousie Medical School in 1964. Lou was a family physician in Saint John for a number of years and was employed with Workers Compensation. He later became the Medical Director of the Saint John General Hospital as well as the Saint John Regional Hospital until his retirement in 1997. He was an active member of the Saint John Lebanese community, and was always active in the Saint John sports community as a player, beloved coach, and administrator, and president of the Central Minor Hockey League. He was a member of Riverside Golf and Country Club. Louis enjoyed his residence in Florida, traveling the world with Carol, and summers at the cottage with the grandchildren. He is survived by five sons, Dr. Michael (Anne), David (Karen) both of Saint John, John (Kellie) of Quispamsis, Scott of Saint John and Mark (Susie) of Hampton; one daughter Cathy (Ian) Wilson of Saint John; seventeen grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Resting at Fitzpatrick's Funeral Home, 100 Waterloo St., with visiting on Monday and Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Peter's Church Wednesday at 11:00. Interment will take place in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Jean Cooke

Jean Evelyn Cooke, 90, of Halifax, formerly of Sutherland’s River, Pictou County, passed away June 7, 2011 in the QEII Health Sciences Centre, Halifax.
Born in Elmsdale, she was the daughter of the late Simpson George and Bessie (Withrow) MacMillan.
Jean was educated in Elmsdale and completed her Grade 12 in Halifax at Mount Saint Vincent. She attended Normal School in Truro where she received her teaching certificate. She had a Bachelor of Arts, a Master of Arts as well as a Bachelor of Education from Saint Francis Xavier University in Antigonish. Jean had a long teaching career in Halifax and Pictou County.
She is survived by daughters, Frances Garner and Lorraine Cooke; a granddaughter, Gabrielle Berard.
She was predeceased by her husband, MacDonald Cooke.
Cremation to take place. There will be no visitation at the request of the deceased.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday from the H.W. Angus Funeral Home Chapel, New Glasgow. A reception to follow in the funeral home.

Margaret Broderick

It is with heavy hearts that we, the family, announce the peaceful passing of Margaret ‘Margie’ Broderick on Tuesday, July 19, 2011 in Halifax, where she had resided for the last several months. She lived her entire life in the family home at 115 Victoria St., Glace Bay.
Born in Glace Bay, Jan. 6, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Louis Thomas and Gertrude Margaret (McDaniel) Broderick.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Margie was a member of St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay. After graduating from St. Anne’s High School, Provincial Normal College, Margie returned later to St. Francis Xavier University obtaining a Bachelor of Arts Degree. She enjoyed her career as a teacher in Point Aconi and the Glace Bay area retiring from St. Michael’s Senior High School in 1988. During her earlier years Margie was an accomplished basketball player which led to coaching youth basketball. She also served at one time as a member of the Board of Directors for the Glace Bay Hospital.
She especially loved her cottage on the Margaree River in North East Margaree on the property of her late maternal grandparents where her past times included many lively games of auction forty-fives with family, friends and visitors and fly-fishing for salmon on the Margaree River.
Margie is survived by nieces and nephews, Thomas (Tanis) Broderick, Fergus, Ont.; Kathryn (Terry) Bolger, Elora, Ont.; Mary Jo Broderick, Calgary, Alta.; Elizabeth Anne Broderick and John Lorne Broderick of Antigonish, N.S.; Jamie Broderick and Janice (Harold) McIntyre, Sydney, N.S.; Paul (Stacy) Gauthier, San Francisco, Calif.; Margaret (Ariz) David, Halifax, N.S.; and several grand nieces and grand nephews and great-grand nieces and great-grand nephews; numerous cousins; two sisters-in law, Ella Broderick, Fergus, Ont. and Marge Broderick, Sydney, N.S. and brother-in-law, Reginald Gauthier, Halifax, N.S. She will live on in the hearts of all and be missed by many.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by brothers, William, Adrian, John and Reginald; sister, Alice and an infant sister, Marie.
Heartfelt thanks are extended to all the QEII doctors and nurses and palliative care team, RJF Health Care Nurses and The Berkeley Bedford Staff who gave their all to care for Margie over the past months – Thank You.
Miss Broderick will rest at Curry’s Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay where visitation will be held Thursday, July 21 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 22, in St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay with Fr. Leo Boone officiating. Burial will be in St. Anne’s Cemetery. All are welcome to join the family for a reception in the church foyer.

Joseph Charles Lee

Joseph Charles Lee, 67, of Sydney River passed away suddenly at his home on July 20, 2011.
Born and raised in Glace Bay, he was a son of the late Frank and Susan (Herritt) Lee.
After attending St. FX University, Joe resided in Halifax and Toronto before returning to Sydney River for the latter part of his career with the Bank of Nova Scotia, where he worked until his retirement. He was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Church and a Fourth Degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus. Joe enjoyed the magic of Christmas and spoiling his wife and children. Many Sunday afternoons were spent dancing with his wife, Teresa in their living room.
He leaves behind daughters, Laurie (Lance Nakamura) and Amy (John Conway); grandchildren, Kaiden, Spencer, Phoebe and Megan, all of Ontario.
Besides his parents, Joe was predeceased by his loving wife, Teresa Catherine.
Visitation will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday, July 25, in T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral mass will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 26, in Our Lady of Fatima Church, Fr. Devereaux will officiate. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery.

Dr. Marianita “Nita” Powers

Marianita Power, 77, (formerly Sr. St. Bernard Meriam, Congregation of Notre Dame), passed away Sunday, July 25, 2010, at the MacGillivray Guest Home in Sydney. Before going to the guest home she resided in Coxheath for many years.
Born in Glace Bay, and raised on Commercial Street, Marianita was the daughter of the late Bernard and Ethel (Daye) Power.
She was a former member of St. Anne's Church, Glace Bay. Marianita graduated from Normal College and taught school at Brook Village, Glace Bay and Antigonish.
She received a BA, B Ed from St. Francis Xavier University, a Masters in Elementary Education and a Doctorate in Educational Psychology from the University of Alberta in Edmonton. Marianita was associated with pre-service, in service, curriculum and program development in the education departments of St. FX, UCCB and the University of Alberta. For several years she worked as an education and human development consultant which took her to several provinces to help educators, hospital personnel and parent groups. Marianita was the first director of the Bachelor of Child Study Program at Mount Saint Vincent University. In 1985, Dr. Power was appointed executive assistant with the Nova Scotia Teachers Union. She had spent close to 25 years with the Congregation of Notre Dame Nuns.
Nita as she was known, was a very outgoing lady who loved reading and skating. She also loved animals, especially cats.
She is survived by two brothers, Russell (Dawn), Mira Gut, Darrell, Coxheath; two nephews, Michael Crowell, Edmonton, Neil Power, Glace Bay; three nieces, Patricia Croft, Karen Horsman, both in Moncton, and Erin Power, Glace Bay.
Nita was predeceased by her sister, Joan Crowell and her brother-in-law, Ted Crowell.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 27th from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the V. J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral mass will be celebrated Wednesday at 11 a.m. in St. Anne's Church with Fr. Errol MacDonald officiating. Cremation to follow with interment at a later date in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens. 
All are welcome to join the family for a reception in the church foyer. A prayer service in Marianita's honor will be held Tuesday evening at 7:30 p.m. in the funeral home.

Lillian (Maroun) Hogan

Lillian Cecilia (Maroun) Hogan, 68, of Halifax, died in the presence of loved ones at the Victoria General Hospital on Friday, Aug. 5, 2011. 
Born March 9, 1943 in Sydney, N.S., she was the youngest child of Thomas and Mary (Joseph) Maroun. Lillian graduated from Holy Angels High School, and went on to graduate from St. Xavier University with a Bachelor of Education in 1968. On July 9, 1971, Lillian was married to Kevin Dougal Hogan; her husband, best friend and hero for 40 years.
Lillian began her teaching career in 1968 in Dartmouth and went on to teach in New Ross and in New Minas. Until she retired in 1999, she was a passionate teacher who strived to make a difference in the lives of her students. She pioneered the teaching of cooking classes to boys in her Home Economics program, and met Kevin when she invited him to speak to her class in 1969. 
Lillian enjoyed gardening and receiving guests at her beautiful Victorian home in the Annapolis Valley. Over the past year, she cherished the tranquility and natural beauty at her cottage in Moser River. 
She was a selfless and loving mother, a devoted wife, a faithful sister and a proud aunt. She was also a loyal friend, a fighter and an eternal teacher. Her grace and courage in the face of her illness have been an inspiration to her family and friends. 
She is survived by her beloved husband, Kevin, and her much loved daughter and son-in-law, Brenda (Hogan) and Tim Elson of Halifax. She is also survived by her sisters, Amy Zurawski, Bess (Frank) Horan, Adele Stroud, Martha Smith, Shirley Lewis and Virginia MacNeil and her brothers, Rev. Albert Maroun and Joseph (Molly) Maroun. She also leaves her sisters-in-law, Sharon (Allan) Marble, Linda (Jim) Greene, and brother-in-law, Daniel Hogan. 
She was predeceased by her sister, Mae Greene and brother, Norman Maroun, who died in infancy. 
A special thanks to the staff of 8a/b and 5b of the VG Hospital, in particular Drs. Hadzimurtezic, Sparavalo and Shivacumar. 
The family is requesting that memorial donations be made to the Lymphoma and Leukemia Society of Canada at www.teamintraining.ca in the name of Vicki-Ann Hugli who will be running in Lillian’s honour in San Francisco on Oct. 16, 2011. 
A memorial mass to celebrate Lillian’s life will be held at St Peter’s Church at 10 Maple St., Dartmouth at 10 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 26, 2011.

 

 



John Joseph MacNeil

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our husband, father, grandfather and brother John MacNeil Sr., at the Deer Lodge Centre in Winnipeg, MB on September 4, 2011. 
John will be greatly missed by his wife of 41 years Cora (nee Galeon) and their four children, Fil (Helen), Dan (Alison), John (Rowena) and Brigitte (Jason) and all 11 grandchildren. 
John was born in Florence, NS to Neil and Mary MacNeil of Sydney Mines, NS on January 7, 1944, the fifth of 10 children and one of a pair with his twin sister Elizabeth. 
John was predeceased by his parents and younger brother James and is survived by his brothers and sisters Dan (Hope), Peter (Elva), Mary (Harold), Elizabeth, Vaughnie (Jude), Theresa (Don), Sara (John), Audrey (Lawrence) and his many nieces and nephews. 
John grew up in Sydney Mines and was always surrounded by family and friends, which may have been why he was always so open and welcoming to all. John's generosity was known by many and he could never refuse a person in need. He received his degree at St. Francis Xavier University and then followed his older brother Dan's footsteps out west to Manitoba to live and teach. 
Lamay/Viewing and Celebration of his Life was held in Winnipeg on September 7th and September 9th. 
In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Huntington’s Society would be greatly appreciated. We will always love you.

 



Marilea (McCloy) McAllister

Peacefully, with the love of her family surrounding her at Credit Valley Hospital on September 29, 2011, Marilea completed her life's journey in her 68th year.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 41 years, Ian and her loving sons Iain and his wife Erin and Andrew. Her two grandchildren Sarah and Lukas were a source of great joy. She is also survived by her brother Douglas McCloy and her niece Tracey McCloy. She leaves to remember her with love, her sister-in-law Laurie Atkins (Lorne) and Lindsay (Gregg), Erin (Daniel), Cameron and Jonathan Atkins and brother-in-law David Boyd (Joan) and Graham (Luisa) and Kathryn (Nora) Boyd. She was predeceased by her parents, Leolea and George McCloy and her sister-in-law Jocelyn Boyd. She will be fondly remembered by Lynn McAllister and Wendy McCloy and by her many cousins and friends and colleagues.

Marilea lived her life loving and giving to others. Her first love was her family. Through her work as a therapeutic dietician, currently as a dedicated teacher with the Peel Board of Education and as an enthusiastic scout leader she touched many lives.

Her lifelong m embership in and commitment to PCYC gave her treasured friendships and the joy of sailing and in return, Marilea gave leadership and support to sailing programs and preparing a history book of the club.

Marilea lived her life to the fullest and gave her best to all that she did. She will be dearly missed, but always remembered.

Cremation has taken place. 

A Memorial Service will take place at First United Church, 151 Lakeshore Rd. W., Port Credit on Saturday, October 8, 2011 at 11 a.m.

Alexander MacDonald

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our brother, Alex, on Nov. 23rd, 2011. He passed away peacefully at Ivany Place, Bedford, NS. 
Born in New Waterford, he was the son of the late Duncan J. and Margaret (McInnis) MacDonald.
He was a graduate of St. F. X. University, receiving an award in Celtic Studies. Alex taught school at Breton Education Center, New Waterford for a number of years and retired in 1993. Alex loved to play cards and looked forward to the weekly game with the guys. He also enjoyed fishing at Lake Ainslie.
He is survived by brothers Blair (Shannon), Fall River, NS, Michael (Laurie), New Waterford; sisters Louise MacDonald, Bedford, Anne Marie (Frank) Robinson, Brampton, ON., Dianne Melendy, Smith Falls, ON.
Besides his parents, Alex was also predeceased by brother, Franklyn and a sister in infancy, Mary Agnes.
We want to give special thanks to the staff at Sandpiper Hills, Ivany Place, for the care and compassion they gave our brother.
Visitation will take place Monday, November 28th, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, New Waterford, 862-7500 and a funeral mass to celebrate Alex's life will be Tuesday, November 29th, 10 a.m. in the Parish of Saint Leonard, Mount Carmel Ave. with Father Ray Huntley officiating. A luncheon will follow in the parish hall, Convent St. Cremation to follow with burial at a later date.

Father John Joseph MacIntyre

The MacIntyre family are very saddened to announce the passing of their brother, Rev. Father John Joseph MacIntyre on Sunday, Dec. 25, 2011.
Father was the son of the late Norman and Christene (Nicholson) MacIntyre of Boisdale.
Father was born on June 1, 1939, at Leitches Creek, C.B. and grew up in Boisdale, C.B. He was ordained a Catholic priest on May 22, 1966, at St. Joseph’s Church in North Sydney and then served at St. Theresa’s, Sydney, St. Anthony Daniel, Sydney, St. Paul’s, Dartmouth, Star of The Sea, Canso, St. Agnes, Littler Dover, St. Joseph’s, Little Bras d’Or and St. Joseph’s, Port Hawkesbury. Father then joined the military as Chaplain and served at CFB, Kingston, CFB, Halifax, Shannon Park, Squadron and Dockyard, CFB, Shearwater, CFS Holberg and CFB, Chilliwack, B.C.
After retiring from the Armed Forces in 1995, he returned to the Diocese of Antigonish where he served as Pastor at Holy Guardian Angels Parish, L’Ardoise and Pastor of St. Leo’s Parish and St. John the Baptist Parish, Glace Bay.
Father will be sadly missed by his sisters, Marjorie (Don) MacKay, Mary (Gerald) Lawless; brothers, Norman (Leona), Donnie (Gail). Father is also survived by many cherished nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Visitation for Father will be held Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2011, 7-9 p.m. at St. Leo’s Church, Glace Bay. Father will then be transferred to St. John’s Church, New Aberdeen, Thursday, Dec. 29 for visitation 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. with a Bible Vigil commencing at 7 p.m. A funeral mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 30 at St. John’s Church, Glace Bay. A luncheon will be held at St. Leo’s Church, Glace Bay, with interment to follow at St. Andrew’s Parish Cemetery, Boisdale.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Father’s memory may be made to Palliative Care, VON or the Cancer Unit, Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
