It is with regret the Sloan and MacLeod families announce the passing of our daughter, sister, aunt, friend and companion Jessi Sloan, on Friday, June 10, 2011 at her home in Sydney.
Jessi was predeceased by her dad, Bobby Sloan.
She is survived by Lizzie (Petrie) Sloan of Dominion, the best mother and friend a daughter could have, and companion, friend and protector, Gordie MacLeod of Sydney. Jessi is also survived by big sister Theresa Burt of Sydney, who was there every step and every minute of this journey and by her husband Clem, whose treats were always welcomed; by sister Mary MacIntyre of Bridgeport whose emotional support comforted her heart and whose amazing food nourished her soul, and by her husband Blair whose hugs were always appreciated; by brother John of Dominion whose sense of humor kept her smiling and his wife Lois who was there to do whatever was needed; by baby sister and best friend in the whole world, Diane Gardiner of Hamilton ON, who will remain forever in her heart and by her husband Russell who always made her feel welcome; by sister-in-law June MacLeod-Donald who opened her home, heart and family to give her the strength she so often needed and by her partner David. Jessi will be missed by many loved nieces, nephews and godchildren.
Jessi was blessed with old and new friends who have made it possible for her to make this journey with grace and dignity. Jessi’s many friends will miss her indomitable spirit and the generosity and kindness she exhibited throughout her life.
Jessi was a graduate of MacDonald High School in Dominion and went on to earn her degree at Saint Francis Xavier University in Antigonish NS.
She was employed with Coastal Business Opportunities for many years. Her last position, during her illness, was with Service Canada.
Special thanks is extended to the Palliative Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital for all their care and concern.
A funeral mass will take place at 11 a.m., Monday, June 13, 2011 at St. Eugene’s Parish, Dominion, with internment to follow at St. Eugene’s Parish Cemetery.

Ross MacIntyre

MacIntyre, Ross- 62, Port Hawkesbury. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of a wonderful husband and father, Ross MacIntyre on Friday, May 27, 2011, in  Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston.

Born in Glace Bay, Ross was the son of the late Ambrose and Patricia (Stewart) MacIntyre. Along with his parents, Ross was predeceased by his brothers, Ambrose "Bo" and Daryl.

Left to mourn his absence, love and words of wisdom are the love of his life, Carole (Gouthro) MacIntyre  wife of 38 years; his loving daughters, Nicolle, Port Hawkesbury and Heather (Roy), Lower Sackville; his pride and joys, grandchildren, Kelsey and Jonah; sisters, Betty (Edward) Langer, NFLD, Sheila (Dan) Langer, NFLD,  Gail (Kevin) Lynk, Glace Bay and Patricia (Bob deceased) Young, Kitchener and Aunt Lollie (Richard) Penny, New Aberdeen. 

A believer in lifelong education, Ross practiced what he preached. He graduated from Teachers’ College in Truro in 1973. In 1983, he graduated from St. Francis Xavier University with a Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Education degree. In 1991, he graduated from Acadia University with a Diploma specializing in Special Education. For over thirty years, Ross dedicated his life to his job as an educator within the Strait Regional School Board. He taught Grade 2 at Port Hastings Consolidated, then worked as an Educational Assessor for 12 years, and returned to the classroom to teach Grade 3, first at Centennial Elementary School, then Tamarac Education Centre. Ross was a member of the Port Hawkesbury Marching Band where he played the bass drum. He enjoyed participating in the parades and meeting new people on their travels.

Upon retiring in 2005, Ross began his life as a world traveller. He and Carole took many trips together and with friends. He really loved life and wanted to live each day to the fullest. Ross loved nothing better than spending time with family and friends, sharing many stories and lots of laughs. He also enjoyed gardening and yard work, as well as sitting by the pool at "the Resort". Ross will be forever remembered by family, friends and colleagues for his great sense of humour, his wonderful smile, his quick wit and his infectious laugh.

As a member of St. Joseph Parish in Port Hawkesbury, Ross had a strong devotion to his faith and a profound spirituality to his church.

 At this time, we, the family, would like to take this opportunity to thank the nurses of the Progressive Care Unit at St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish for the kindness, care and gentleness shown to Dad while under your care. To the nursing staff at Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston we extend a heartfelt "hug" for your patience and professionalism shown to our family during our time of need. Each member of the medical team made Dad’s transition more bearable. With love we send you into the arms of God.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Friday, June 3, 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. with vigil service at 2 p.m. in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Funeral Mass celebrating Ross’ life will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, June 4, in St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, Port Hawkesbury with Father Andrew Boyd officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery. Theresa Kathleen (Terry) Boyd

Boyd, Theresa Kathleen "Terry", 84, of the R.K. Nursing Home, formerly of Lakevale, Antigonish Co. passed away peacefully on August 9, 2011 at St. Martha's Regional Hospital after a lengthly illness.

Born in Boisdale, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Mary Ann (MacNeil) Campbell. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Terry married Donald "Buddy" Boyd in 1953 and they celebrated 50 years of marriage together.She was a teacher, homemaker and a valued volunteer for her church and community. She graduated from Normal College, Truro and held teaching positions in Cape Breton and Antigonish County. She continued her education through courses at St. F.X. University. She was active in many associations. She was one of the founding directors of the North Shore Tourist Association and a director of Antigonish Town and County Home Care Assoc. She was on the Appeal Board for Social Services and was active in the Home and School Association. She was a member of St. Columba Parish serving in the Ladies Guild, CWL, and church choir. In her spare time, Terry loved to knit sew and crochet. She was also an avid card player.

Surviving are her children: Mary (Steve Lacusta), Halifax; Francis (Mary), Lakevale; Dianne (Merle), Lakevale; Robert "Bobby" (Linda), Antigonish; Lynn (Raymond) Durant, West River; and Michael (Estelle), Lakevale; and grandchildren: Nick, Alex, Jamie, Angela, Jason, Michelle, Chad, Tracy, Chris, Aaron, Raylene, Logan, Amy, Brandon, and Dylan; greatgrandchildren: Kayla, Katie, Koralyn, Trent, Sierra, Torilyn, and Eli; brothers in law: Alex (Tena) Boyd, Winnipeg, John (Cordis) Boyd, Burlington, ON.; sisters in law: Marguerite Boyd, Lakevale, Kay Boyd, Hamilton, ON., Jean Boyd, Hamilton, ON; Martha (Deanie) MacDonald, Lakevale, Chris (Forbie) MacGillivary; James River , Marie (J.P.), Hendricken, Mount Stewart, PEI, Lucille (Walter) Dunn, Burlington,ON, Rita (Russell) Fougere, Dartmouth; and many nieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by her husband Donald "Buddy" Boyd, her sister Betty and husband Bert Penney; a brother in infancy; brothers and sisters in law: Joe and Helen Boyd, Myles Boyd, Tada and Jim O'Neil, Jerome Boyd, and Blaise Boyd.

Visitation will be in C.L. Curry Funeral Home, 135 College Street, Antigonish on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. Funeral Mass will be held in St. Columba Church, Lakevale on Saturday at 3:00 pm with Reverend Andrew Boyd presiding. Burial in the parish cemetery.

Mary Colleen (Palmer) Monier

The death occurred at the Tom Baker Cancer Center in Calgary, AB, on June 4, 2011, of Mary Colleen Monier (nee Palmer), age 51 years.
Dear wife of the late Bill Monier. Beloved daughter of Lou (Kilmer) and Mary (MacAdam) Palmer of Antigonish, N.S. Colleen is also lovingly remembered by her brothers and sisters: Chris (Jan) Palmer of Bedford, N.S.; Lynne (Pat) Bradley of Suffolk, P.E.I.; Maureen (Brad) Barrie of Calgary, AB; and Michael (Catharine) Palmer of Calgary, AB. Predeceased by her infant brother, Gregory; grandparents, Alban and Tina MacAdam and George and Jeanette Palmer. She is adoringly remembered by her 12 nieces and nephews.
Colleen worked as a teacher and guidance counsellor for many years in the Calgary school system. She enjoyed the outdoors and was a natural athlete. She had many passions, including downhill skiing, running, hiking, scuba diving in Bonaire, and gardening. Over the years, she ran a total of 15 marathons, including the Boston Marathon in 1998. She loved traveling and spending time at her parents’ cottage in Lakeside, P.E.I., for family get-togethers and playing cards (hearts), a family favorite.
She was a devout Catholic and contributed her time to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul and to the GAMMA Girls program in Calgary, as well as to Chalice, through which she found many foster parents for Catholic sponsorship.
She fought a courageous battle with cancer with determination and grace, and will be remembered for her positive outlook and beautiful smile.
Visitation is on June 7 from 7 to 9 p.m. at McInnis & Holloway Funeral Home in Calgary. A funeral mass will take place at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Calgary on June 8. Interment at a later date at St. Theresa The Little Flower Church Cemetery, Morell, P.E.I.

Dr James Murrary Beck

Dr. James Murray Beck, 96 of Lunenburg, died Thursday, June 30, 2011 in Drummond Hall, Halifax.

Born in Lunenburg, he was a son of Allan Clyde and Florence (Silver) Beck.

During the Second World War he was a radar mechanic and officer in Britain and on the continent with the R.C.A.F., attached R.A.F. and attached to U.S. Ninth Air Force. Educated at Lunenburg Academy, Acadia University, and the University of Toronto, he taught in the public schools in South Brookfield, Lawrencetown, and Guysborough, and in the veterans’ school in Windsor and Pictou. After receiving a Ph.D. at the University of Toronto, he taught at Acadia, the Royal Military College of Canada, and for seventeen years in the Department of Political Science at Dalhousie.

Between 1967 and 1969, he acted as a constitutional advisor to the G.I. Smith government. He received honorary LL.D.s from Dalhousie, St. Francis Xavier, and the Royal Military College; was elected a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 1976; and became a member of the Order of Canada in 1993 and a fellow of the Royal Nova Scotia Historical Society in 2004. He was also awarded the Confederation of Canada Medal in 1992 and the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal in 2002.

The author of seven books and the editor of two others, he wrote “The Government of Nova Scotia”, “Pendulum of Power”, a two volume biography of Joseph Howe, the two volume “Politics of Nova Scotia”, and the “Evolution of Municipal Government in Nova Scotia”. He also wrote fifty biographies of Nova Scotians for the “Dictionary of Canadian Biography” and about fifty other articles and reviews on Canadian and Nova Scotia history and government. During his retirement he did considerable research and writing on Lunenburg’s historical development and completed a study of Lunenburg’s provincial and federal elections between 1758 and 1999.

For him, his seventeen years at Dalhousie were the highlight of his teaching career and he appreciated beyond words the recognition accorded him by Dalhousie community at the time of his retirement: honorary LL.D., Dalhousie Alumni teaching award (chosen by the student body in the first year of his establishment), status of professor emeritus, a Dalhousie gold “D”, and a Riggs painting from his own students.

In Lunenburg, he served on the board of directors of Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital and Harbour View Haven and assisted for a lengthy period with the Lunenburg Food Bank. A long -time elder of Central United Church, he devoted his last writing to articles on the church’s history.

He was predeceased by his sister Evelyn, Mrs. Graham Best, Waterville; and by his brother Donald. He is survived by nieces: Linda Lowther, Halifax; Heidi McHale, Penticton, B.C. and Katrina Beck, Istanbul, Turkey. For many years his friend Marie Lohnes was kindness itself.

Cremation has taken place. Funeral Arrangements are under the direction of the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213, Hwy. # 3, Lunenburg, and where a memorial service will be held Tuesday, July 5 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Glenn MacLean, a long-time family friend presiding. Burial will be at Hillcrest Cemetery. A reception will follow at the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home.

Anthony Joseph Power

Passed Away On: 16/03/2011

POWER, Anthony Joseph– 1961 - 2011. It is with great sadness that the family of the late Anthony Joseph Power announce his passing in St. John’s, NL on March 16th, 2011 at the age of 49. Anthony was a member of the Roman Catholic Church. Anthony leaves to mourn his parents, Philip and Sheila (McCarthy) Power; sisters: Rosemary Davis (Dave); Jennifer Power Scott (Jeff Scott); brother Robert, and special friend Joan Thomey. Fr. William Hearn will conduct the funeral service at the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception in Grand Falls-Windsor, NL on March 21st. Interment will be at the Roman Catholic Cemetery, Grand Falls-Windsor. Pallbearers are Knights of Columbus members: William Aylward, Leo Dormody, Harvey Head, Leo Murphy, Gerald Murray, and Ronald Rose. Donations in Tony's memory can be made to Healing Expressions, Art Therapy Program, for people living with Mental Illness. During his final year Tony found much joy, acceptance and friendship through Healing Expressions. Thomas Gerad “Jerry” Marsh

It is with great sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of Thomas Gerard (Jerry) Marsh of Thompson Street, New Waterford, which occurred Sunday, Nov. 15, 2009, after a very short illness.
Born and raised in New Waterford, he was the son of the late Thomas Marsh and Kate (Andrews) Marsh.
Jerry was a member of the Parish of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Church, New Waterford.
Jerry was an excellent baseball, hockey and rugby player during his school days and was very sports-minded and was instrumental in ensuring New Waterford had a rink and baseball and soccer fields.
Jerry began his career as a machinist with the mines and then taught the Millwright Trade at University College of Cape Breton and the Sydney Vocational School. He served his community for many years first starting as a councillor and then as the longest serving mayor of New Waterford. Throughout his political career he served on many boards and associations to help his community.
Jerry is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Georgina (LeDrew); his children, Donna Marsh, Stephen Marsh (Anne Marie), Cheryl Wootton (Brian), Barbie Burke (Paul); brothers, Bill (Sadie) and Karl. Jerry was blessed and loved by five beautiful grandchildren who he loved dearly including Ashley Livingston, Robert Marsh, Shauna Marsh, Brendan Wootton and Saralyn Burke.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Eileen McIsaac and Stella Muise.
Visitation for the late Jerry Marsh will be held Tuesday, Nov. 17 from 7-9 p.m. at McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford, 862-7500. A funeral mass celebrating Jerry’s life will take place at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18 at the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel, New Waterford, with Fr. Paul MacNeil officiating Interment will be in the Mount Carmel Cemetery and a reception will be held immediately following at the KOC Hall, 3226 Plummer Ave., New Waterford, and all are welcomed to attend.
The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses of the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital and the Cape Breton Regional Hospital for the kindness shown to Jerry and his family during his short battle with cancer.

George VanAudenhove

George Leopold VanAudenhove, 54, of Halifax, passed away July 5, 2011 in Halifax.
Born in Antigonish, he was a son of the late Julien Gustave ”George” and Emilia (Stalmans) VanAudenhove.
George was a resident of Halifax for the past 10 years having previously resided in Ontario where he worked as an Engineer.
He is survived by a son, Julien, Port Hawkesbury; a brother Paul, Stellarton.
He was predeceased by his parents and step-mother, Madeleine (VandeWeyer).
Cremation has taken place.
A graveside committal service will be held in Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery, Stellarton at a later date.

James William Charles “Billy” Pelly 

Pelly, John William Charles "Billy" 46, of Antigonish passed away suddenly on September 8, 2011 at home.

Born in Antigonish he was the son of Sheila Pelly (Michael), Lincolnville and Edward (Melena) Pelly, Antigonish.

Billy was a graduate of St. F. X. University, with a Bachelor of Sociology and Dalhousie University with a Bachelor of Social Work. He was a very dedicated father to his daughter Allison. He worked with the Youth Service Bureau and Crossroads in Ottawa. He was also a social worker with Childrens Aid in New Glasgow for nine years. He was very active in sports in his school years.

Besides his parents, he is survived by his wife Alice; daughter Allison; brother, Blair (Sian) Pelly, Halifax; sisters: Brenda Pelly(Robert MacEachern), Antigonish and Crystal Pelly (Mike) Halifax; half brother, Nelson Johnson, Afton; nephews: Gregory and Kyle ; neices: Ann Marie and Asha; and grand nieces and nephews Brydon, Ashtyn, and Scotia.

He is predeceased by his sister Veronica; grandmother, Agnes; grandparents, Bertha and Rubin ; and cousin, Theresa

Visitation will be in C.L.Curry Funeral Home, 135 College St.,Antigonish Sunday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Monday in St. Ninian's Cathedral at 10:00am. Cremation to follow.
