Chapter News for the Alumni News
Edmonton Chapter
May 29, 2012
The Edmonton Alumni Chapter is planning a busy summer filled with social gatherings and great times! Our first planned event is a Pub Night to be held on Friday, June 22 from 5:00 on at Brewster’s in Oliver Square (11704 104 Avenue). We have the entire upstairs of the pub so we are hoping for a larger turn out. There is no cover charge and all alumni are encouraged to bring a friend or two along with them. The more the merrier!
Our second event is our Annual Student Send Off and Alumni BBQ to be held on Saturday, August 11 at 5:00 at the Clan Rugby Club. Last year we held the event at the same venue and the weather and location were wonderful and the food delicious. Note: There is no cost for this event. We are hoping for a great turn out again this year.
Please do not hesitate to contact me at oakesluc@shaw.ca if you have any questions about the Edmonton Chapter or would like to become involved in our dynamic group.
Wishing you a wonderful summer,
Laurie Oakes

The Edmonton StFX chapter had a busy, and fun year!
The most recent event was a StFX Day celebration held on December 4th
with approximately 45 alumni. Each decade was represented from the 40’s up to
the 2000’s.
This year’s StFX Day celebration was held at St.
Edmund’s Parish, with a Mass celebrated by Archbishop Emeritus Joseph MacNeil
(’44) and Fr. Leo Cordeau (’57). After the Mass, there was a reception in the
Parish Hall, followed by a dinner.
It was a great night for everyone to gather, share
stories over a glass of cheer, and meet some new friends. Included in the crowd
were Mary MacDonald(’81), David McGreer (’81), Lisa Miller (’01), Andrew and
Patricia Koning (’07), Helen and Pierce Peters (’61), Jane (’88) and Roger
(’85) Smith, Anne and Vince Isaac (’60) Miki and Paul Norris (’50), Denise and
Bernie Bryden (’52) and Harriet and Hyland Fraser (’72) who recently moved to
Edmonton from Antigonish.
A couple of months earlier, the Edmonton chapter had a very successful pub
night with a crowd of about 50 alumni. We met up at a local watering hole, and
enjoyed a great night of fun. The crowd was generally from the past few years,
including Ben Soutar (’01), Tanya Boyd (’03), Daniel MacDonald (’07), Terry
Leblanc (’05), Maura Beaton (’07) and sister Laureen Beaton (’10). One of the
neat parts of the pub night were the out of town visitors who were in Edmonton for a
conference, and had heard about the event (through Joe Doyle of ’87), and came
by to join in on the fun. It included Paul Tobin (’88) visiting from Halifax,
and Erin MacDonald (‘08) visiting from Hamilton.
In addition to these two recent events, the Edmonton chapter had a
great President’s Reception in June, and a successful student send-off and
alumni picnic in August. There are plans in the works for a few events for
2011, so if you are in and around Edmonton,
please let us know.
As well as organizing these events, the Edmonton chapter has a
Facebook group page (search: StFX Alumni Association – Edmonton Chapter) with
information on events, and photos from past events. There is a great group
working on the Edmonton
chapter, including Laurie Oakes (’79) who is the new President of the chapter.
If you want to be part of the chapter organizing group, or simply want to make
sure you’re on the contact list for future events, please send us an e-mail
(stfxedmonton@hotmail.com) with your e-mail address and contact information
(including your graduation year).
